Tips for Promoting Corneal Health

Many have vision loss, so the Cornea Society recognizes the need for better cornea care habits. You should form healthy practices that can strengthen your cornea and promote general eye health. Doing so helps protect your vision as you get older. Here are some tips for bolstering your corneal health.

Include Colorful Vegetables In Your Diet

Eating bright and colorful vegetables can help protect and fortify your eyesight. Orange carrots are full of beta carotene, which is the forerunner of Vitamin A. This vitamin is a valuable antioxidant that helps renew cells in the eyes. Orange peppers contain Vitamin C, Vitamin E, zeaxanthin, and lutein. These nutrients lower your risk of developing macular degeneration.

You should also incorporate dark green vegetables into your daily diet. Broccoli, kale, lettuce, and peas are only some of the green vegetables you can eat. Remember, the greener they are, the more nutrients they have for your cornea and other eye structures. Some light cooking will keep most of their nutrients intact.

Forget About Smoking

Smoking tobacco causes many health issues. It is also a factor that impacts the development of age-related macular degeneration. Research shows that people who smoke tobacco tend to develop macular degeneration and cataracts. If you are smoking, you should stop the habit soon.

Eat Colorful Fruits

Visit the fruit station in your local grocery or market. Blueberries, grapefruit, oranges, strawberries, and raspberries have high levels of Vitamins E and C. If you eat these fruits daily, you will reduce your risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts. You can make a colorful fruit salad and eat it right after your meal.

Perform Eye Exercises

If you work on your computer all day, you tend to develop eye strain. Aside from regular lubrication, you can also perform the following eye exercises to strengthen your cornea and other eye structures:
Remember To Blink

Doing close work makes you forget to blink. You should concentrate on blinking. Do blink for three to four seconds for about two minutes. This will help lubricate your eyes. The tears will cleanse your eyes to improve your focus.

Take A Few Breaks

Be sure to rest your eyes every 20 minutes by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Do this as part of your daily routine. If you relax your eyes, you can focus better.

Protect Your Eyes From The Sun

UV (ultraviolet) rays are harmful to your skin and eyes. If you stay under the sun without proper eye protection, you have a high risk of developing cataracts. Intense UV rays can also damage your retina. Your thin skin around your eyes can also develop skin cancer and wrinkles. Be sure to wear UV-protective sunglasses even on cloudy days.
