Conventional LASIK Eye Surgery for Clearer Vision

LASIK, or laser in-situ keratomileusis, vision correction is one of the most popular procedures available today for vision improvement. This is a safe and effective procedure that enables many individuals to experience clear vision without the use of glasses or contact lenses. At The Eye Clinic of North Dakota, our experienced ophthalmologists have helped transform the vision and lives of countless patients through LASIK vision correction. They also offer other advanced laser procedures, such as wavefront-guided Custom LASIK and IntraLASIK using the state-of-the-art IntraLase® laser to help patients achieve optimal vision correction results.

Candidates for LASIK Surgery

While LASIK surgery can help many individuals achieve better vision, the procedure is not intended for everyone. Qualified candidates for LASIK surgery must meet a number of requirements. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and have fully developed eyes that have maintained a stable prescription for at least one year. In addition, candidates should not have suffered from an eye injury or infection during that time, and should not currently suffer from an autoimmune disorder. Candidates should also not be pregnant or nursing. Certain eye conditions, such as dry eyes and corneal scarring, can also disqualify an individual for LASIK.

Our eye surgeons can determine if you are a qualified candidate for the procedure during your initial consultation. During the consultation, our ophthalmologist will check your eyes and thoroughly review your medical history to determine if LASIK surgery is right for you. If you are determined to be a suitable candidate, our surgeon will explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you may have. Schedule an eye evaluation at our practice to find out if you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery.

The LASIK Procedure

During the LASIK procedure, a microkeratome blade is used to create a hinged flap on the top layer of the cornea. The flap is then folded back, and an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea according to the patient's specific treatment needs. For nearsighted patients, the laser is used to create a flatter corneal surface. For farsighted patients, the laser is used to create a steeper corneal surface. For astigmatic patients, the laser is used to create a more spherical rather than cone-shaped appearance.

Once the cornea is reshaped, the flap is folded back into place where it bonds on its own without sutures in a matter of seconds. Patients experience improved vision almost immediately after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

At The Eye Clinic of North Dakota, we believe patient education is important when it comes to successful LASIK results. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions regarding LASIK surgery. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact our practice. We look forward to helping you!

What is LASIK vision correction?

LASIK vision correction is an advanced procedure that uses a laser to remove a thin layer of the cornea. This helps light entering the eye to refract better, thus improving vision. Most of our patients no longer need to wear corrective eyewear or contact lenses after LASIK vision correction surgery.

Is LASIK surgery safe?

LASIK is a relatively safe procedure, though all surgical procedures carry inherent risks. Common side effects from the LASIK procedure include glare, starbursts, and difficulty seeing at night. These side effects are temporary and should only last for a few days after your procedure. While permanent complications can occur, they are rare. Only a small percentage of patients suffer from serious, permanent complications after LASIK surgery.

Does LASIK surgery hurt?

LASIK surgery is virtually pain free, as only a minimal amount of tissue is removed. Some patients experience mild discomfort, but this can usually be controlled with medication.

How well will I be able to see after LASIK vision correction?

There is no guarantee that you won't need to wear corrective eyewear after LASIK vision correction treatment. However, LASIK is effective at decreasing your dependence on both glasses and contact lenses. Most patients are able to see 20/20 or better after their operation.
